With deadlines looming, it was hard to focus on my work after hearing about the death of Steve Jobs. Taking time, I decided to blast some music and paint a portrait of someone who's impacted all of our lives. By putting all of my thoughts and emotions in each brush stroke, I was able to say goodbye and move forward. RIP Steve!

Steamboat Willie Time-Lapse Flick

Had a blast painting this piece for a commission! I'm loving the muted color palette with pops of color here and there. Incase you wondering what kind of paint I'm using, I always started off with Acrylic to quickly get rid of the white by toning the canvas and block in the black areas. Nothing more intimidating than a white canvas staring back. And then I move on to oils for the duration of the painting.

Mickey's Retreat to Bright's Creek

This is the event piece for the Celebrity BMW Pro Am Golf Tournament at Bright's Creek in Spring Mills, NC. I got to meet a lot of really cool people like Wayne Gretzky, Lucas Black, Josh Kelley, Greg Kinnear, Jeffrey Donovan, and the legend Don Felder. It was an amazing tournament on one of the most beautiful unforgiving golf courses I've ever seen. If you ever get a chance to see Bright's Creek, definitely check it out.

"The Scariest Little Monster"

Disney Fine Art will be debuting "The Pixar Collection" this weekend in Sacramento at the California State Railroad Museum. It was such an honor to be a part of this project alongside such talent. The other artists involved were Mike Kungl, Rodel Gonzalez, Trevor Carlton, James Coleman, Bill Morrison, Lorelay Bove, Noah, John Rowe, Harrison Ellenshaw, Jody Daily, and Daniel Arriaga. We were each chosen by Disney and Pixar to paint one of Pixar's great films. I was thrilled when I found out I was chosen for Monsters Inc. Pixar has been such an inspiration for me since they're first film Toy Story and I've been dying for the chance to paint Pixar. Finally here's my opportunity.

Below you will see my process from sketch to color study to finished oil painting. After several drawings, I figured out that I wanted to create this jigsaw puzzle of monsters and introduce "Boo", the curious sweet little human girl, in the center of the painting with all the surrounding Monsters reacting to her presence. By their reactions, I'm able to describe who those characters are in the story. Mike and Sully are the heros of the story so you see them as loving and protective of Boo. Behind them you find the Villains of the story, Randal and Mr. Waternose who appear scary and wanting to harm Boo. Most of the other monsters are innocently terrified of the little human girl. This painting was a blast and I hope to paint more Pixar films in the near future.

Usually before I start a painting, I like to do several quick sketches and maybe even a color study to help me figure things out before painting the first brush stroke. For this piece, "The Godfather", I simply built a large canvas, turned on the Godfather trilogy soundtrack, and started painting. Had no clue how the painting would turn out, but sometimes you have to take a leap of faith, let go, and see what happens. Luckily, the painting gods were on my side and everything worked out at the end. I had a BLAST painting this piece!

Epcot Food & Wine Festival 2010

Food & Wine Art for Disneyland

Here's my logo art for Disneyland's Food & Wine festival starting next weekend. In the original concept, I had the chef carrying a larger than life bottle of wine, but it was shot down by Disney. I think that's why I like it so much! The idea was to have a chef inside a winery picking the right wines to compliment his cooking ingredients with a doorway in the background showcasing a California vineyard landscape with hints of Disney's California Adventure. I'm always pushing myself to create new ways to draw Mickey Mouse. I've been drawing the mouse since I was 4 years old after my father taught me the basic steps starting with a few simple circles. Mickey will always be my favorite subject and I'm always searching for that perfect portrait of Mickey Mouse. I'll never get there but the journey is so much fun!

New Chef Series Released at Epcot F&W Festival

This past weekend at the opening of Epcot's International Food and Wine Festival was the release of my new "Chef Series" inspired by foods from around the world. These are the first 4 paintings of many more to come, each piece being specific to a countries popular foods, wines, and ingredients. These first pieces represent America, Italy, France, and Japan. See if you can guess which is which. These pieces are available at the festival as a limited edition giclee, 8 x 8", hand signed and numbered.

Official Art of D23 Expo

Here it is!!! Finally!! The official art for Disney's upcoming D23 Expo. I wrote more info in a previous post about D23 and what the expo is all about. Just think Comic-Con, except it's all about Disney. Tons and tons of really cool stuff happening at the Expo in September. Below is a time-lapse film I made while painting this piece. I just set up a camera in the corner of my studio and just pretended it wasn't there as I painted. I wasn't sure how it would turn out but I have to say it came out really cool. You're seeing three weeks of painting in all of 2 minutes. I'll for sure be doing more of these time lapse films in the future. Enjoy!!

Here's the official art for Epcot's International Food & Wine festival starting in September. The idea is a chef traveling around the world collecting all the best ingredients and wine the world has to offer. Disney has created an amazing collection of merchandise based from the art. You can check it out here. This painting was a lot of fun for me. I have sketchbooks filled with drawings from Epcot over the past 10 years and it was great to finally bring all those drawings together into a finished painting. Official Art for D23 EXPO

This year just keeps getting better and better. A few weeks ago, I finished the biggest painting of my life....so far anyway. It's the official art for the very first D23 Expo. For those who've never heard of D23, it's the official fan club for Disney that was launched this year. D stands for Disney and 1923 is the year Walt Disney first opened his first studio, D23. They have a great website! Check it out here. And every year, D23 is going to host the D23 EXPO which is a lot like Comic-Con, except it's all Disney. It's so big that Disneyland can't hold everything so it'll be across the street in the convention center. It's going to be 4 days filled with Celebrities, Music, major upcoming announcements, behind the scenes awesomeness, sneak peaks, and the best Disney merchandise anywhere. It's going to awesome!!! And for me, I had the honor of painting one image that basically sums up the past, present, and future of Disney. And I was told early on that the original painting would not be sold, but instead put into the Disney Vault as a part of Disney history as the official art for the very first D23 Expo. No pressure!?!? I then recieved the list from Disney of things to incorporate into this one painting and the list included: Disneyland, Mickey Mouse club, Toy Story 3, Princess and the Frog, John Lassater, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Darby and the little people, 20,000 Leagues, Shaggy Dog, Mary Poppins Broadway, Lion King Broadway, Radio Disney, ABC's Lost, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, the Legends statue, Donald Duck, Herby, ESPN sports, Tinkerbell, Pinocchio, Goofy, and a little bit of Disney Magic........ And yes, It's ALL in the finished painting!!! It was the most challenging piece I've ever tackled but it was so worth it. Of course, It's all top secret right now so I can only tease you with a little clip of the painting. But later, I'll be posting the full art, process drawings, and also a short film that includes a time-lapse of me painting the entire piece from start to finish. You'll get to see 100 hours of painting in all of 2 minutes. It's really cool!

No Doubt for VH1 Save the Music

My next painting for VH1 Save the Music Foundation is of the band No Doubt. They were one of my favorite bands back in the day and they're back together touring through the summer. The band hopes the tour will spark some new inspiration for a new studio album. Limited editions of this painting will be available soon through VH1 and participating galleries. No Doubt liked the painting so much that I also converted it into a tour poster that will follow them on tour so pick one up if you're at the show and support the Save the Music Foundation.

Digital painting confusion?

Earlier on this blog, I mentioned painting some digital pieces using the software Art Rage and that I really liked the painterly feel and was thinking to introduce the style in my future works. Unfortunately, this statement confused a lot of people to think that my future work would be digital paintings and not my traditional oil on canvas. To end the confusion, these digital paintings are just the preparation steps before I start the actual painting in oil. I was only saying that I like the painterly feel in the digital pieces and I'm going to try to loosen up when I'm truly painting with oil on canvas. I'm a huge fan of digital art, especially digital art that looks like it was created by hand, but for me, my fine art will always be created with some paint, a brush, and a blank canvas. Cheers, Tim

"The Enchantment of Snow White"

Here's the next painting from my Cubist Disney collection, "The Enchantment of Snow White". I'm honored that this original painting is in the private collection of Mr. Herb Barker of Barker Animation. The most difficult and enjoyable part of the process to creating these pieces is the drawing stage. I did about 100 drawings before I got it just right. I'm really excited about these pieces and I think they'll go a long way. Next up is Pinocchio.

Of Mice and Music

As the famous quote goes,"It all started with a mouse." This is my first painting in my new interpretive style inspired by the works of Picasso. One of my many goals as a Disney fine artist is to interpret these beloved stories and characters in a new fresh way. Which is tough because everything has been done, especially with Disney, but I think I've finally found my way and this is it. I'm planning on painting each Disney animated feature by release date starting with Steamboat Willie and then on to Snow White and so on.

There's tons of celebrity chefs, the best wine from all over the world, and the best food you've ever tasted!! It's an amazing experience! The festival starts in September and ends in November. "Legends" for VH1 Save The Music Foundation

I have joined forces with Vh1 Save The Music Foundation to create "Legends". This painting is my interpretation of some of the most respected rock and roll musicians of our time and their collaboration that celebrates the influence of previous generations on the new. The hardest part of this painting was selecting the Musicians. Everybody I asked had a different list of Legends and so I went down the top 25 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine and picked the most popular guitarists recognized by all generations. They are BB King, Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, John Frusciante, Keith Richards, Carlos Santana, and Chuck Berry.

Some of you might have noticed, my website is long overdue. I started this blog when I upgraded to a Mac Pro from a PC and because my web design software wasn't compatible with Mac, I knew it would be awhile before I could learn how to use new software. So this blog was a way for me to upload new paintings in the meantime. Finally, after many months, I've started building my new website using Adobe Dreamweaver and all is looking fantastic! Look for the launch of my new website around the end of June. Cheers!

Nodland Cellars

It's been a pleasure working with Nodland Cellars creating their wine label. They make a Private Blend Red Wine, a jazzy red wine that swings with ripe fruit, exotic spice and subtle earthy notes. My Wife and I gave birth to our first child, Lillian Danielle Rogerson, on Tuesday, March 4th at 1:04pm. She weighed in at 7lbs 7oz and 19 inches tall. It was love at first sight. She's amazing, beautiful, and the best thing ever. The past 2 weeks have been the greatest experience of my life.

Dave Matthews Band

I'm a big a fan of the Dave Matthews Band and have been for a long time. I see them live every time they come to Florida and it's always a great show. They're incredible live! Dave is truly one of the best storytellers of our time.

I've been exploring the digital world and painted this piece in Paint X. It's a little frustrating learning the tools and figuring things out but I'm sticking with it and hopefully in the future, painting digitally will look and feel like oil on canvas.

"Flying Over Sacramento"

This weekend I had the pleasure of hanging out with two Disney Legends, Margaret Kerry, the model for Tinker Bell, and Kathryn Beaumont, the voice and model for Wendy and Alice. The three of us joined together to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Disney's Peter Pan at the Stage Nine Gallery in Sacramento, CA. I painted the event piece titled, "Flying Over Sacramento", which includes Tinker Bell and Wendy leading the way to Neverland over the Sacramento Tower Bridge.

For three days, the three of us met hundreds of Disney fans and I had the pleasure of hearing all the old stories of Walt Disney and what it was like to work for him.

It's incredible to see how much the animators captured the real models in their characters. Margaret is "TOTALLY" Tinker Bell. Everything about her, the way she walks, her expressions, her feistiness, it's all Tinker Bell. And Kathryn still sounds just like Wendy and Alice with her British accent and has retired after 30 years of teaching 2nd grade. How amazing, that Wendy grew up and became a school teacher.
